In the evening, I often listen to jazz while sipping calvados.  Chet Baker is one of the many jazz artists that my Dad introduced me to.  My Dad played jazz trumpet.   As most of us elderly, we have so many colorful stories.  With my Dad and uncles, even though I had heard the story 20 times or more, I still greatly enjoyed their stories,  waiting for the delivery and the style as if I had never heard the story before.   When Chet Baker came up, he always told the story about how upset Frank Sinatra was when DownBeat (Jazz magazine) voted Chet Baker male singer of the year.    It was like playing one of your favorite records, the way he told a story. ...something that I cherished and enjoyed when my Dad was still here.

I wish I knew this information when I lived in Chicago.  I was oblivious.

There are elements of my personality and essence that I reflect on and try to understand what is their origin. One of these is realizing that I get happy when it snows.  For some people, they dread the driving, the shovelling, etc.  It was never like that for me.  When I look back on my childhood growing up in Pennsylvania, snow was an important element in our lives. When snow was in the forecast, there was this drama in the forecast, hoping it would be enough so that SCHOOL would get cancelled.  The ritual started the night before, listening to the radio to get the forecast.  This was before the Weather Channel.   Then after nervously struggling to sleep, we arose early to listen to the radio.  We anxiously awaited to hear the name of our school district cancelling school.   When we got the announcement, we cheered and celebrated.   How much did we not want to go to school?  A lot.  We didn't have to trek off to buses in coats, gloves, and galoshes.  We could stay at home, eating

One must strip away the programming and concentrate on primary observations. My Dad loved jazz.  One of the first concerts he took me to was Count Basie and his Orchestra.  Before the concert, my Dad took me to the stage door.  He had me get all the band members to autograph my program.  Count Basie came to greet us, wearing a white wife beater T-shirt.  Butch Miles on drums was incredible. The whole band was so nice to me. Count Basie's understated style is still of great appeal to me.   One of my wonderful early memories. Thanks to my Dad's interest in jazz, I was fortunate to have seen and met Benny Goodman and Dizzy Gillespie as well.

Back when I was growing up, Time Tunnel was one of my favorite television PROGRAMS PROJECT TIC-TOK? The Time Tunnel  was an American  color   science fiction  television series written around a theme of  time travel  adventure and starred  James Darren  and  Robert Colbert . The show was creator-producer  Irwin Allen 's third  science fiction  television series and was released by  20th Century Fox Television  and broadcast on  ABC . The show ran for one season of 30 episodes from 1966 to 1967. Project Tic-Toc is a top-secret U.S. government effort to build an experimental  time machine , known as "The Time Tunnel" due to its appearance as an elliptical passageway. The base for Project Tic-Toc is a huge, hidden underground complex in  Arizona , 800 floors deep and employing more than 12,000 specialized personnel. The above sketch I did in 2007.  I have had 40 or 50 blueberry bushes for a decade or so.  I rarely harvested a single blueberry.  This year I acidified the ground with pine bark much, put in 2 10 foot copper rods filled with basalt.   The spring looked incredibly optimistic with boatloads of flowers and young berries.  I started reading about techniques to keep the birds from your blueberries.  Most involved complicated hoop structures with bird netting.  My blueberry area is too big to build a structure such as that.  The bushes are 6 to 8 feet tall.   I learned 2 important techniques.  I bought rubber snakes from the Dollar General and placed them in and on the bushes.  I also harvested before they were ripe, put them in a closed paper bag for 2 days.   Thanks to these 2 techniques, I have had the best season ever with multiple pints of blueberries harvested.  Growing your own food sounds easy and pat.  In reality it is extremely challenging.  Just when you have a beautiful cabbage
