WANTED DEAD GROUND HOG

For all of the wonderful elements that gardening brings to my life, it is also a source of demoralization.  I do a walkaround in my garden at least twice a day to check for pests, disease, etc.  This evening I came out to see my 2 largest pumpkins eaten and three of the plants whittled to nothing.  From the teethmarks in the pumpkin fragment left, I surmise another groundhog attack.  Nothing does as much damage in so little time than a groundhog.   Rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, etc are nothing compared to a groundhog.

I have trapped 2 good sized ones already this year and the trap on the hole is empty.  If I don't get this thing in a day or 2, my garden will be done.  This ain't YouTube gardening....

What are the odds that this video comes into my feed immediately after I posted this?  Just a coincidence of course..

I still don't trust this guy....no way he is a one man gardener.

He is a deceiver.

  1. Thanks for a varied and interesting read on your blog.

Regarding the groundhog - you might be able to scout for it and shoot it at dawn or smoke it out if you find holes in the ground? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a quick solution so that the remaining crops can be saved.

    1. Hi Henrik,
Just did my morning garden rounds. The rest of the pumpkins are gone as well as the watermelon and cantaloupe. I have a trap set on the hole I have previously trapped dozens. Nothing so far. Shooting them does nothing. I have to trap them and then pitchfork them in the head 20-30 times to kill them. They are literally invincible.

It really is demoralizing. My pumpkins and watermelon were doing better than ever this year...but that's how this reality works. If persists to find an Achilles heel and when it does, it piles on nonstop. Thanks for your kind words and comment. Best regards, db
