I had been sending donations to Ensemble Ptashitsa in Russia for many years. After each of their Youtube livestreams, I would send 20 dollars or so. I always received an email of gratitude from Ivan, the leader of the group. When the Russia Ukraine event started, I got my Paypal account locked and my bank account was locked as well. I was able to get my bank accounts back, but to this day cannot link Paypal to my bank account. I could no longer send donations. Ivan released a statement about not getting deceived by stories in newspapers on Ukraine and Russia, used to divide us. It was a brave statement inferring media fakery. There were ALWAYS many Ukrainians in the livestream chats of Ptashitsa. These illusions of borders and countries could not be clearer. Thank you for sharing this beautiful Russian song. It reminds me of my nephew and niece from whom I have recently been separated from.. I especially like the accordion – my grandfather and grandfather each had one, but I have no memory of them playing for me and the instruments was thrown away. However, I remember my grandmother, how she used to sing hymns and old Swedish songs to me. She grew up in a croft and in very poor conditions, her father was a traveling man from Belarus.
ReplyDeleteI very much appreciate your heartfelt comment. I studied Russian accordion for years to be able to play this music. One of my last girlfriends was from Belarus and we enjoyed the history of this music. Folk music is key to unlocking the meaning to this realm. cheers, db
