George Jones and the Big E
In light of my last post on Frankie Valli and having to perform till they die, I remembered a George Jones concert I attended. I trekked to this fairground in West Springfield MA to see Jones perform before he left this realm.
I remember I was shocked. He almost didn't look real, almost like a dummy. The above video is from his last concert, so you can sort of see what I saw.
The strange part is still to come.
In constructing this post, I forgot the name of the fair that it was held at.
So I google George Jones Massachusetts Fairground..
And lookey here what comes up....
George Jones, former CEO of Big E, dies
George Jones, a former president and chief executive officer of the Eastern States Exposition credited with the fair’s expansion, has died, the organization reports.
The Big E’s current CEO, Eugene Cassidy, informed board members and trustees Monday “with a heavy heart” that Jones had died. No further details were provided.
So I went to see George Jones at a fairground that was run by George Jones.!!!!!
For the best of vintage Jones....
Her ToHe Stopped Loving Her Today da
She told him, "You'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again
Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you
I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today
You know, she came to see him one last time
Ohh, and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time, he's over her for good
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Many think touring that old is a cash grab. Another way to look at it is the artist doesn't need the money, but they have a crew, roadies, their band members that do need the money, there's no health insurance or 401k plans for behind the scenes employees. Hopefully there is now. And it appears the fan base wants to have one last time with their musical heros. City governments have dollar amounts in a fund that can be used to bring acts, fairs, carnivals in to help promote tourism. The fairground in West Springfield MA, like many venues across the USA, received alot of taxpayer funding over the years. Gotta have shows come in to justify that spending.
