AI's "Yes Man" Problem ... Is Your Chatbot Just Telling You What You Want to Hear?

The newest AI panic? Sycophancy.

Some critics are torching OpenAI’s GPT-4o for playing the “yes man” too well—nodding along, validating whatever you say, even if it’s flat-out wrong.

Is it? AI can definitely reinforce biases (Monitaur flagged that back in 2023), and even OpenAI’s own safety reports peg persuasion as a bigger risk than just being agreeable.

Still, the concern sticks.

That soft-spoken “you’re right” vibe? Feels good, but it could lead users deeper into their own echo chambers.

So here’s the real question: do we want AI that comforts us—or challenges us?

Too much back-patting, we stay stuck. Too much pushback, we log off.

Time to set the priorities straight.

  1. It's designed to be user friendly. But eventually AI will be the user.
